TV Channels Guide

Why Sports Channels and Packages Don't Have Fixed Numbers

If you have ever searched for "What channel is MLB Extra Innings on?" or "What channel is NFL Sunday Ticket on?", you may have noticed that nobody gives a clear answer. That is because these sports packages work differently from regular TV channels.

These Are Not Regular Channels

Sports packages like MLB Extra Innings, NBA League Pass, NHL Center Ice, and NFL Sunday Ticket are not single channels with a fixed number. They are bundles of temporary overflow channels that activate only during live game broadcasts. Each simultaneous game gets its own temporary channel, and those channels shut off when the games end.

Channel Numbers Change Constantly

Providers assign blocks of channel numbers for these packages. For example, a provider might use channels 700 through 730 for MLB Extra Innings. But the specific game assignments rotate for each broadcast window. Game 1 might be on 701 tonight and 704 tomorrow. The numbers are not tied to specific teams or matchups in a permanent way.

How to Find the Right Channel

The most reliable method is to check your on-screen guide on game day. Look for the sport package name (e.g. "MLB Extra Innings" or "NBA League Pass") in your guide, and it will show which channels have active games. Your provider's app usually lists active games as well.

You can also check the league's own website or app. MLB, NBA, NHL, and NFL all publish game schedules with broadcast information including which channels or streaming platforms carry each game.

Regular Sports Channels Are Different

Standard sports channels like ESPN, Fox Sports 1, NFL Network, and NBA TV do have fixed channel numbers that you can look up by provider and city. These are regular channels included in specific packages. Only the multi-game subscription packages use temporary channel assignments.

Pay-Per-View Works the Same Way

Pay-Per-View (PPV) events like boxing and UFC fights follow a similar pattern. Providers assign PPV content to specific channel numbers that are only active during the event. The channel number for a PPV event may differ from one event to the next on the same provider. Check your on-screen guide or your provider's website on the day of the event to find the correct channel.
