Why Some Channels Are Missing From Your Package
You signed up for a TV package expecting to get certain channels, but some are missing. This is frustrating but usually has a straightforward explanation.
Packages Are Tiered
Every major provider organizes channels into tiers or packages. Lower-priced packages include fewer channels, and popular networks are often reserved for mid-tier or premium packages to encourage upgrades.
For example, on DirecTV the Entertainment package has around 75 channels, while the Choice package adds another 30+. Channels like NFL Network and regional sports networks are only available starting from the Choice tier. On Spectrum, the TV Select Signature package is the base cable tier, with additional channels unlocked in TV Select Plus and TV Platinum.
Premium Channels Are Always Separate
Channels like HBO, Showtime, Starz, and Cinemax are never included in standard packages on any provider. They are always sold as paid add-ons regardless of which base package you have. This applies to all providers including Spectrum, Xfinity, DirecTV, and DISH.
Regional Availability
Some channels are only carried in specific markets. Regional sports networks are the most common example. You will not see SportsNet LA if you are outside the Los Angeles area, and Comcast SportsNet Chicago is only available in the Chicago market. This is based on broadcast rights, not your package level.
Contract Disputes
Providers and channel owners renegotiate carriage deals regularly. When negotiations fail, a channel can be pulled from the lineup entirely. This happened with several Sinclair-owned Bally Sports regional networks in recent years. These disputes are usually temporary but can last months.
How to Check What Is in Your Package
The fastest way to see exactly which channels are included in each package is to look up your provider's lineup on this site. Select your provider from the homepage, choose your city, and use the package filter to see which channels come with each tier. Channels marked with a dollar sign ($) are paid add-ons not included in any base package.
