You signed up for a TV package expecting certain channels, but some are missing. This usually has a straightforward explanation tied to packaging tiers, regional rights, or provider disputes.

You signed up for a TV package expecting to get certain channels, but some are missing. This is frustrating but usually has a straightforward explanation.

Packages Are Tiered

Every major provider organizes channels into tiers or packages. Lower-priced packages include fewer channels, and popular networks are often reserved for mid-tier or premium packages to encourage upgrades.

On DirecTV, the Entertainment package has around 75 channels, while the Choice package adds another 30+. Channels like NFL Network and regional sports networks are only available starting from the Choice tier. On Spectrum, TV Select Signature is the base cable tier, with additional channels unlocked in TV Select Plus and TV Platinum. Xfinity uses TV Core, TV Plus, and TV Premium as its three main tiers after renaming them in late 2025.

Premium Channels Are Always Separate

Channels like HBO, Showtime, Starz, and Cinemax are never included in standard packages on any provider. They are always sold as paid add-ons regardless of which base package you have. This applies to all providers including Spectrum, Xfinity, DirecTV, and DISH.

Regional Availability

Some channels are only carried in specific markets. Regional sports networks are the most common example. You will not see SportsNet LA if you are outside the Los Angeles area, and NBC Sports Chicago is only available in the Chicago market. This is based on broadcast rights, not your package level.

Streaming Box App Restrictions

If you use a streaming device from your provider, such as Spectrum's Xumo Stream Box, certain channels in your package may be restricted when you connect from outside your home network. The Spectrum TV app and Xfinity Stream app apply licensing rules based on your internet location, so a hotel or vacation home may lose access to some live channels even though your package includes them. This is an app-level restriction, not a missing package. See the Xumo Stream Box vs Spectrum cable box guide for more on how the app behaves away from home.

Contract Disputes

Providers and channel owners renegotiate carriage deals regularly. When negotiations fail, a channel can be pulled from the lineup entirely. This happened with several Sinclair-owned Bally Sports regional networks in recent years. These disputes are usually temporary but can last months.

How to Check What Is in Your Package

The fastest way to see exactly which channels are included in each package is to look up your provider's lineup on this site. Select your provider from the homepage, choose your city, and use the package filter to see which channels come with each tier. Channels marked with a dollar sign ($) are paid add-ons not included in any base package.

Common Questions

Why are some channels missing from my TV package?

Providers organize channels into tiers. Lower-priced packages include fewer channels, and popular networks are often reserved for mid-tier or premium packages. Other common reasons include premium channels requiring a separate add-on, regional availability limits, and contract disputes that pull channels from the lineup.

Are HBO and Showtime included in any standard package?

No. HBO, Showtime, Starz, and Cinemax are never included in standard packages on any provider. They are always sold as paid add-ons regardless of which base package you have, and this applies to Spectrum, Xfinity, DirecTV, and DISH.

Why can I not get a regional sports network in my area?

Regional sports networks are only carried in specific markets based on broadcast rights, not on your package level. SportsNet LA is only available in the Los Angeles area, and NBC Sports Chicago is only available in the Chicago market. Moving outside the region means losing access regardless of tier.

How do I check which channels are in each package?

Look up your provider's lineup on TVChannelsGuide. Select your provider, choose your city, and use the package filter to see which channels come with each tier. Channels marked as add-ons are not included in any base package.
