About C-SPAN
Launched in 1979 by the cable television industry as a nonprofit public service, C-SPAN provides unedited coverage of the U.S. House of Representatives, with companion networks C-SPAN2 covering the Senate and C-SPAN3 dedicated to additional public-affairs programming.
What's on C-SPAN
C-SPAN was created in 1979 by the cable television industry as a nonprofit public service, founded by cable executive Brian Lamb. The operators that distribute the network also fund it, primarily through per-subscriber affiliate fees, with individual donations added more recently. C-SPAN runs no advertising on its television channels and receives no government funding, an arrangement that underwrites unedited gavel-to-gavel coverage of the U.S. House of Representatives.
C-SPAN2 launched in 1986 after the Senate first allowed televised proceedings. It carries Senate sessions during the week and shifts on weekends to American History TV on Saturdays and Book TV on Sundays. C-SPAN3 followed in 2001, carrying committee hearings, press briefings, and other public-affairs events.
